Group wants evidence for 'extraordinary claims'

First it was God, now it’s the Easter Bunny.

And Allah. And Bigfoot. And UFOs and a host of other “extraordinary claims” that may soon be questioned on TTC buses.

The same organization that brought Canadians the provoking “There’s probably no God” ad campaign calling on viewers to relax and enjoy their lives has rolled out a new campaign that casts a wider net.

“We come at our mission from sort of a skeptical, critical and scientific perspective, but that leaves us to be interested in a whole broad domain of human interest,” Centre for Inquiry spokesman Justin Trottier said Monday. “This campaign we feel quite proud of because we think it is broadening that conversation to all so-called extraordinary claims.”

Is Time Disappearing from the Universe?

Remember a little thing called the space-time continuum? Well what if the time part of the equation was literally running out? New evidence is suggesting that time is slowly disappearing from our universe, and will one day vanish completely. This radical theory may explain a cosmological mystery that has baffled scientists for years.

Scientists previously have measured the light from distant exploding stars to show that the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate. They assumed that these supernovae are spreading apart faster as the universe ages. Physicists also assumed that a kind of anti-gravitational force must be driving the galaxies apart, and started to call this unidentified force "dark energy".

Haiti: The U.S. Created the Earthquake in Haiti?

The Russian Navy reports that the U.S. created the earthquake in Haiti.

The Northern Fleet has been monitoring the movements and activities of U.S. Marines in the Caribbean since 2008 when the Americans announced their intention to reestablish the Fourth Fleet, which was disbanded in 1950, and that Russia responded a year later, with the Fleet led by the nuclear-powered cruiser Peter the Great "by starting its first exercises in this region since the end of the Cold War.” Since the end of the decade of the 70's in the last century, the U.S. "advanced a lot" in the state of its earthquake weapons and, according to these reports, they now use equipment with Pulse, Plasma and Tesla Electromagnetic and Sonic technology together with "shock wave bombs."

The meeting at the Royal Society, which will include representatives from Nasa, the European Space Agency and the UN Office for Outer space Affairs marks the 5th anniversary of the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) programme. SarcMark is a really, really, really a good idea. No really.

Could it be the greatest thing to hit the punctuation world since the ampersand?!

Michigan-based company Sarcasm Inc. has come up with the SarcMark, a symbol to denote sarcasm to help avoid confusion in typed messages.

And, as of this week, you can download this new punctuation mark, which resembles a sort of open circle with a dot in the centre, to your computer or BlackBerry for a mere $1.99.

Oh joy! Oh goodie! Yippee! What a deal!

“Statements have the period. Questions have the question mark. Exclamations have the exclamation mark. When you see the newest punctuation mark for sarcasm, you’ll know the writer of that sentence doesn’t literally mean what they’re writing; they’re being sarcastic,” the company said in a release.

MoD investigate nine UFO sightings in Suffolk

Nine reports of sightings of UFOs in Suffolk were investigated by Ministry of Defence experts last year, it was revealed today.

In a year in which The Evening Star was inundated with readers' reports of strange lights in the skies and fears over extra-terrestrial beings buzzing our communities, it is clear most people did not make a formal report.

Now they will never have the chance - because in future the MoD will be ignoring any little green men who choose to visit Planet Earth.

The department, which previously looked at every single reported UFO sighting to assess if it posed a threat to national security, has decided it's not a good use of resources to continue its work and has axed its investigation unit.

Weird cases: can fish be a tool?

Until recently, customers of LaVie Nails & Spa were able to pay $30 to spend 20 minutes with their feet in a tank of warm water filled with 100 Garra Rufa carp. The toothless two-inch fish like to suck off dry skin and, according to the business, leave customers with smooth, soft feet.

Are Oklahoma City ghosts to blame for NBA Knicks’ loss?

It’s not Halloween, but some humiliated New York Knicks players are blaming ghosts for their trashing Monday by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

It was inevitable, really, that the legend of the Skirvin Hilton Hotel’s 10th floor being haunted would become a national story. Now, it appears, the tale is at least getting around in the sports world.

But is there any truth to the legend of a housekeeper named Effie being impregnated by hotelier W.B. Skirvin and then jumping to her death, baby in arms, from a 10th floor window?

Official Skirvin Hilton response:
"We’re happy to have been able to host the New York Knicks, and certainly from my perspective nothing in or around the hotel affected their stay. The superstitions of some of their players perhaps got the best of them. We’re glad they stayed with us, and we’re proud to be an NBA city.”

Tombs of the pyramid builders discovered in Giza, Egypt

An archaeological team led by Dr. Zahi Hawass has discovered several new tombs that belong to the workers who built the pyramids of Khufu and Khafre. “This is the first time to uncover tombs like the ones that were found during the 1990s, which belong to the late 4th and 5th Dynasties (2649-2374 BC),” said Dr. Hawass.

When we think of Giza we tend to think of the Giza Pyramids. However, while the pyramids were under construction, there was an extensive city to the south that supported the workers. It included houses, bakeries, magazines and a hypostyle hall.

Weird Object Zooming by Earth Wednesday is Likely an Asteroid

A weird object that left some observers wondering if it was a piece of space junk is most likely just a small asteroid, and will zoom close by Earth Wednesday, NASA scientists say. It may be visible to seasoned amateur astronomers as it passes harmlessly by the planet.

The space rock won't hit the Earth, but it will make its closest approach at 7:45 a.m. EST (1245 GMT) when it comes within 80,000 miles (130,000 km) of our planet. That's nearly one-third the distance between the Earth the moon.

Astronomers announced the discovery of the asteroid, which they named 2010 AL30, on Monday. It is relatively small, about 36 feet (11 meters) wide, NASA researchers said.

UFOs sighted in Oldland Common

man from Oldland Common has reported what he believes were UFOs in the sky on New Year’s Eve.

Chris Lacey’s account of the sighting is at www.uk-ufo.co.uk

He said: “My wife and I were watching the fireworks going off for New Year’s Eve and I saw this orangey/red flying object move swiftly across the sky.

"It then stopped and changed direction; at this point two more of these objects appeared and flew towards the other. They then all moved off in different directions steadily but swiftly.

“These lights were definitely not planes or helicopters as the movements were too smooth and the speed they changed direction was too fast.

“My wife is a big sceptic when it comes to UFO sightings, etc, but even she has to admit to being completely baffled and agrees they were not typical aircraft and neither were they Chinese lanterns.”

NASA's Kepler probe finds five strange new planets

In what astronomers called an exciting step toward detecting Earth-like planets, a spacecraft operated by NASA's Ames Research Center has found five strange new planets, beginning to reveal how the structure of our solar system fits into the rest of the universe.

The five planets announced Monday by scientists working on the Kepler probe are an exotic bunch, one with a density as light as styrofoam. The large planets orbit so close to their stars that they may glow with the heat of a blast furnace, as hot as the melting point of iron.

"It's certainly no place to look for life," said Bill Borucki, the principal investigator with the Kepler mission at Ames. "That will be coming later."

Launched in March, the 2,300-pound spacecraft detects the transit of a planet across the star's face. These are the first new planets found by the probe.
