China 'covers suicide bridge in butter'

Government officials in south-east China have ordered workers to cover a 1,000 ft long steel bridge in butter to prevent citizens from using it to attempt suicide.

All the climbable surfaces on the structure in Guangzhou have been covered in greasy fat to put an end to the spate of people threatening to jump from it, The Sun reports.

Government spokesman Shiu Liang said: "We tried employing guards at both ends but that didn't work - and we put up special fences and notices asking people not to commit suicide here.

Not Intelligent Enough To Marry

Social workers banned a young woman from her own wedding in an extraordinary row over whether she is bright enough to get married.

Coffee Break Dangers


CUSTARD creams are Britain's most dangerous biscuits, it was revealed yesterday A study claimed an estimated 25million people in Britain had been injured by biscuits.

Hidden dangers included flying fragments and daredevil dunking in scalding tea. And custard creams were the worst offenders, posing the biggest risk to innocent dunkers.

Around 500 people a year need hospital treatment because of biscuit injuries.

Jackson's Glove Auctioned Off

A jewelled white glove Michael Jackson threw to an Australian fan in 1996 has been sold at an auction in Melbourne for US$49,000 (£29,900).

The late singer tossed the glove into a crowd after a film premiere while he was visiting the country as part of his HIStory world tour in 1996.

Drunk Grandmaster Falls Asleep

A leading French chess player turned up drunk and dozed off after just 11 moves in an international tournament in Kolkata, losing the round on technical grounds, domestic media reported Friday.

Grandmaster Vladislav Tkachiev arrived for Thursday's match against India's Praveen Kumar in such an inebriated state that he could hardly sit in his chair and soon fell asleep, resting his head on the table, Hindustan Times newspaper reported.

Pepsi's Secret Ingredient

The US Food and Drug Administration said a test has found that either a frog or a toad was discovered in a Florida man's drink - but it is not clear how it got there.
The FDA confirmed the remains of an animal were in Fred Denegri's can of Diet Pepsi. Denegri popped open the can on July 23 as he was grilling dinner in Ormond Beach.
